Note: If you are not sure about VLAN Trunking Protocol, please read our VLAN Trunking Protocol VTP Tutorial.

Question 1

Explanation

With VTP, switches can learn VLAN configuration of other switches dynamically.

Question 2

Explanation

VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) allows a network manager to configure a switch so that it will propagate VLAN configurations to other switches in the network automatically.

Question 3

Explanation

Only VTP Client cannot make a change to VLAN.

Question 4

Explanation

The Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP) is a proprietary networking protocol developed by Cisco for the purpose of negotiating trunking on a link between two switches, and for negotiating the type of trunking encapsulation to be used.

In dynamic auto mode, the interface is able to convert the link to a trunk link. The interface becomes a trunk interface if the neighboring interface is set to trunk or desirable mode. The default switchport mode for newer Cisco switch Ethernet interfaces is dynamic auto. Note that if two Cisco switches are left to the common default setting of auto, a trunk will never form.

In fact two other answers (“trunk” and “dynamic desirable”) are also correct but “dynamic auto” is the best choice that fits the requirements, no more no less. For “dynamic desirable” mode, the interface becomes a trunk interface if the neighboring interface is set to trunk, desirable, or auto mode.

Question 5

Explanation

In Cisco switches there are two encapsulations: 802.1q and ISL so we can set two ends to ISL instead -> A is not correct.

The ports between two switches must be set to trunk ports so that they can exchange VLAN information through VTP -> C is not correct.

To connect two switches we can use cross-over cable or straight-through cable (because modern Cisco switches can “auto-sense”) but not rollover cable -> E is not correct.

To forward traffic in the same VLAN (between two or more switches) we can use switches only. If we want to forward VTP traffic between different VLANs we can use either a router or a Layer 3 switch -> F is not correct.

Two switches can only communicate when they are set to the same VTP domain name (and the same VTP password) -> B is correct.

One of the two switches must be set to VTP Server so that it can create VTP updates and advertise its VLAN information.

What are the requirements for running VTP (choose two)
    A. VTP domain names must be different
    B. VTP domain names must be the same
    C. VTP server must have the highest revision numbers
    D. All devices need to have the same VTP version

As per link, if both neighboring port modes are Dynamic Auto then it will be Access. So how can Dynamic Auto is the correct answer for Question 4? The question is asking to create a trunk link.

Please help!!! This question is repeated…so it is important..

Question 4. WTF is desirable auto mode ? It’s either (Dynamic) Desirable or (Dynamic) Auto…

@Vin, the question probably meant “trunk mode, or desirable” mode…

    Question 4- Part1
-First- There is no desirable auto mode. the question should say dynamic desirable
-Second- The question only refer to trunk or dynamic desirable mode on the neighboring interface?

    Question 4- Part2
-Third:Refer to the DTP Negotiated Interface Modes table in the link below:
    http://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=2181837&seqNum=8

Which DTP switch port mode allows the port to create a trunk link if the neighboring port is in trunk mode (row 4 , column 1), or dynamic desirable (row 3 , column 1)?

    Question 4- Part3
From the table : The switch port modes for the neighboring interface are located on the left side of the table (Column 1), and the switch port modes for the local interface are on the top of the table (Row 1). So, the neighboring ports in trunk mode (row 4 , column 1), or dynamic desirable (row 3 , column 1) allow to create a trunk link (cells 3,2 and 4,2), when the local interface is in Dynamic auto mode (row 1, column 2). this is the answer.

    Question 4- Part4
if the question would said …. trunk mode, or dynamic desirable, or dynamic auto ? then the answer is C. Dynamic desirable

Question 4 isn’t such a good question because there are two possibilities of the question here which each turn out having multiple correct answers. Since we know “desirable auto” does not exist, the question could have either meant to ask “dynamic auto” or “dynamic desirable”.

If the question meant ‘dynamic auto’, the answer could either be ‘B. trunk’ or ‘C. dynamic desirable’, since
    trunk + trunk = trunk
    trunk + desirable = trunk
    auto + trunk = trunk
    auto + desirable = trunk

If the question meant ‘dynamic desirable’, then A, B or C can be completely right since
    trunk + auto = trunk
    trunk + trunk = trunk
    trunk + desirable = trunk
    desirable + auto = trunk
    desirable + trunk = trunk
    desirable + desirable = trunk

My advice is don’t try to memorize any answer here , just learn which combinations make what and you will be fine.

    hi Tom,

Thanks for your explanation nice one. I would like to add that the default behaviour is auto auto which may not be able to form the trunk , so to create a trunk manual intervention would be needed.

    Thanks

    Imran
